Ähnlich wie vor etwas mehr als einem Jahrzehnt die Begriffe 'global' und 'Globalisierung' scheinen heute die Termini 'transnational' und 'Transnationalisierung' zu viel gebrauchten Modebegriffen zu werden. Sollen damit alle grenzüberschreitenden sozialen Beziehungen bezeichnet werden und wird Transnationalisierung damit ein neuer Catch-All-Begriff? Oder ist mit Transnationalismus ein bestimmtes und durchaus seriöses Forschungsprogramm gemeint? Vor dem Hintergrund eigener langjähriger theoretischer und empirischer Studien zum Thema zeigt Ludger Pries, dass sich die Art und Weise zwischenmenschlichen Zusammenlebens, die Vergesellschaftung der Menschen, immer stärker transnationalisiert. Damit ist Transnationalisierung eine wichtige Form der Internationalisierung von Vergesellschaftung, die unser 21. Jahrhundert sehr stark bestimmen wird. Der Autor zeigt dies anhand konkreter Beispiele auf den Ebenen der alltäglichen Lebenswelten, der Organisationen und gesellschaftlicher Institutionen.
