Dans un approvisionnement énergétique décentralisé utilisant des ressources renouvelables, l’utilisation du biogaz issu de la digestion anaérobie gagne en importance en raison de sa teneur élevée en méthane et de son large éventail d’applications. Le biogaz contient 50 à 55 % de méthane, 40 à 45 % de dioxyde de carbone et des traces de sulfure d’hydrogène. Actuellement, le biogaz est principalement utilisé dans la production de chaleur et d’électricité à petite et moyenne échelle. Cependant, la forte teneur en dioxyde de carbone réduit le pouvoir calorifique du combustible et limite ainsi la puissance maximale du moteur. Les traces de sulfure d’hydrogène produisent de l’acide sulfurique, qui corrode l’intérieur des tuyaux, des raccords, etc. Par conséquent, au lieu de brûler directement le biogaz, il est plus intéressant d’éliminer le dioxyde de carbone et le sulfure d’hydrogène et d’utiliser le biométhane (issu du biogaz) pour la combustion dans les moteurs à combustion interne, pour la production d’électricité et pour les applications thermiques.
