Die in diesem Buch beschriebene Machtforschung bietet jedoch eine andere, vielleicht weniger bekannte Perspektive auf die Macht: die Macht aus der Sicht der Literatur. Sie zeigt, dass die Literatur Interpretationen bietet, die die gängigen Auffassungen von Macht untergraben - durch den sprachlichen Stil, durch das Verhältnis der Figuren zu ihrer Umwelt sowie durch die Themen, die die literarischen Werke behandeln. In diesem Buch geht es um Situationen, in denen die Figuren gleichzeitig Macht haben und nicht haben, in denen sie keine Macht, aber Autorität haben, in denen sie keinen Einfluss, aber Fähigkeiten haben, in denen sie trotz ihrer Schwächen Widerstand zeigen.
