W celu zmniejszenia ubóstwa z trwałymi rezultatami, w ciągu ostatnich kilku dekad zachodnie organizacje zapewniły środki na zainicjowanie projektów społecznych w Afryce, a w szczególności w Burundi. Niestety, wyniki tych programów i projektów często zatrzymywały się pod koniec okresu finansowania. Niniejsze badanie jakościowe, obejmujące liczne studia przypadków, analizuje, w jaki sposób inicjowane i wspierane z zewnątrz projekty grup oszczędnościowych na rzecz rozwoju społeczności w Burundi można było przeprowadzić od zależności do niezależności. Ze wstępnego i osiowego kodowania wyłoniły się cztery główne wnioski: potrzeba uwzględnienia kluczowych czynników kontekstowych, potrzeba przejścia od szkolenia opartego na umiejętnościach do transformacyjnego uczenia się, potrzeba przejścia od tradycyjnego hierarchicznego przywództwa do konstruktywistycznego przywództwa relacyjnego oraz potrzeba wykorzystania procesów opartych na wzajemności. Wyniki te zostały wykorzystane do stworzenia dynamicznego modelu zrównoważonego rozwoju społeczności.
