Tracheostomia jest niezbędną procedurą chirurgiczną w medycynie ratunkowej i intensywnej terapii. Pielęgniarki odgrywają kluczową rolę w zarządzaniu pacjentami z tracheostomią, stąd potrzeba poprawy ich wiedzy w celu poprawy jakości życia pacjentów. W badaniu wzięło udział 50 pielęgniarek, podzielonych na 37 kobiet (74%) i 13 mężczyzn (26%). Większość (56%) była w wieku od 22 do 30 lat. Duża część ankietowanych pielęgniarek nie przeszła wcześniej żadnego szkolenia w zakresie opieki nad pacjentami z tracheostomią. Podczas gdy większość z nich była w stanie poprawnie zdefiniować tracheostomię, niektóre konkretne pojęcia, takie jak różne rodzaje kaniul i możliwe powikłania, pozostawały niejasne. Jeśli chodzi o praktykę, najczęściej wykonywanymi zabiegami były odsysanie wydzielin (76%) i czyszczenie kaniuli (80%). Ponad trzy czwarte uczestników zgłosiło brak znormalizowanego protokołu w swoich oddziałach. Wreszcie, 82% pielęgniarek przyznało, że ich opieka miała bezpośredni wpływ na jakość życia pacjentów.
