Ce livre a pour objectif de contribuer à l’analyse de la lecture et de ses pratiques. Pour ce faire, le choix s’est porté sur le romancier José de Alencar qui, et ce n’est pas un hasard, était aussi un lecteur assidu de romans, de chroniques coloniales et de récits de voyage. Cette soif de lecture se retrouve dans sa correspondance, son autobiographie, ses préfaces, ses post-scriptums et ses œuvres de fiction comme O Guarani, de 1857. Ces récits ont permis de dresser la carte d’un lecteur qui a consigné les lieux où il a lu, les ouvrages qu’il a lus et, en particulier, l’appropriation de lectures sur un élément important de son écriture : l’indigène. Cet élément, en effet, met l’œuvre de José de Alencar en contact avec la grande toile de fond de la culture du romantisme et du nationalisme à la fin du XIXe siècle, notamment au Brésil. Ainsi, l’objectif de ce travail était de comprendre comment certains récits ont été appréhendés par Alencar pour la composition de l’Indien dans O Guarani.
