Being from the South, Nyla Cox is privy to the racism that exists toward African Americans. As a young child, Nyla witnessed many racist challenges firsthand. Although whites had been the overall cause, Nyla is more convinced that it is a pain inflicted by her own race, which is far worse.Implosive colorism was an act that Nyla was no stranger to throughout her life, yet she still would strive for better. Despite Nyla’s countless attempts for a better life, her dark complexion continued to be a daily reminder of the horrible life she would have moving forward. Things take an even darker path when Nyla believes she has found a solution to all of her problems. Nyla knows that her solution will take some self-convincing. Will this brown brown girl be able to work up enough nerve to fix her problem once and for all?Prologue:Over the disco lights and the hit song flashlight by George Clinton and Parliament blasting, Memphis Cox and I still managed to lock eyes. Chocolate men had always been my type, so seeing Memphis was right up my alley. After about an hour, Memphis finally made his move. 'What’s happening, light skin?' I admit, his game wasn’t all that, but I didn’t object. It didn’t take long before me and Memphis were spending all our time together. Memphis didn’t care that I had four children and stayed with my mom. I felt like my mom just hated-me. So, having Memphis come into me and the kids’ lives was just what we needed. After I revealed the news that I was pregnant with my fifth child, my mom demanded that I get out of her home My sister April, threw my purse behind me. Me and my kids were homeless, but only until I was able to inform Memphis. This man seemed to be heaven sent and my kids loved him. He got us an apartment, and soon after, he put a ring on it. We had no idea the man we knew was only a representative who would soon stop showing up. Months later, I gave birth to my fifth child. Hmm, 'What should we name her?' 'Nyla, Nyla Cox.'
