What does it mean to become a senior? There is a growing body of literature that speaks to aging, and what it means to retire with financial security and good health. But here is another perspective: to come to our senior years, as women and men, and ask: what does it mean to an elder? And might the idea or vision of eldership be a helpful way to frame our understanding and experience of this stage of life and work? This is precisely what Smith does in this publication: make the case that we all need elders in our lives and that we can each one aspire to be an elder. 6
