Disfrutaba acampar y conducir motocicletas, combinando ambas actividades principalmente en el fin de semana del Día de los Caídos. Conoció a Tawnee en el trabajo y se casaron en el ’79. Kennar cambió su motocicleta por una modesta casa móvil. Viajaban a Portland, Oregón, cada año para visitar a la familia de Tawnee. Coescribió 'Ting! La Advertencia Silenciosa' y 'Carlton: Disminuido' con su difunta esposa, Tawnee Chasny.
