Sentado delante de la panorámica ventana del salón de la casona de granito de la Yedra, la finca a la que herido, medio paralítico, decepcionado y muy, muy cansado, he vuelto tras unos meses, casi diez, de ausencia forzosa, contemplo, no sin cierta melancolía, el bosque otoñal de los cien mil árboles que me rodea. La vista, de alguna manera, me reconcilia conmigo mismo, me da fuerza, me anima a completar el proyecto iniciado antes del episodio del garrotazo en el cráneo. En el horizonte sur destaca la inmensa planicie de la Mancha, salpicada por los Montes de Toledo y, en la brumosa lejanía, la andaluza sierra Morena. En los días claros se ven, azuladas, las serranías del Pozo y Cazorla, distantes no menos de doscientos cincuenta kilómetros en línea recta. En mi estado - tengo que moverme con muletas - la cuesta arriba se me antoja casi vertical. Nadie ha creído que fuera a regresar, pero yo lo tenía claro incluso cuando me debatía incómodo en posición obligada horizontal, tetraplégico y desesperado, sondado para orinar y defecando entre las piernas, cuando lleno de optimismo cambié el hospital de Salamanca por el del Ruber en Madrid y me puse en manos de un eminente neurocirujano.
