Thus Spoke Zarathustra (Also sprach Zarathustra) is a philosophical novel by German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, composed in four parts written and published between 1883 and 1885. Much of the work deals with ideas such as the 'eternal recurrence of the same,' the parable on the 'death of God,' and the 'prophecy' of the Übermensch, which were first introduced in The Gay Science.

Nietzsche’s essay, Richard Wagner in Bayreuth, appeared in 1876, and his next publication was his present work, which was issued in 1878. A comparison of the books will show that the two years of meditation intervening had brought about a great change in Nietzsche’s views, his style of expressing them, and the form in which they were cast.
