Les Indiens Hopis und ihre Vorfahren leben seit Hunderten von Jahren in Nordamerika. Diese Geschichte spielt zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts im Hopi-Reservat im Norden des Bundesstaates Arizona. Nachdem das Hopi-Volk nach dem besten Ort gesucht hatte, um sich niederzulassen, wanderte es in das Gebiet aus, das es heute bewohnt - etwa sechzig Meilen westlich der San Francisco Peaks in der Nähe von Flagstaff, Arizona. Die San Francisco Peaks sind sowohl für die Hopi als auch für die Navajo heilig, da sie glauben, dass dort ihre Geister wohnen.Im Mittelpunkt dieser Geschichte steht ein zehnjähriger Hopi-Junge namens Thomas Polywetewa, der seinen Vater und seinen Großvater von ganzem Herzen liebt. Er möchte so viel wie möglich über die Kultur seines Stammes lernen. Dieses Wissen ist für Thomas besonders wichtig, denn er möchte nach dem Hopi-Weg leben, so wie seine Familie ihn ihn lehrt. Das Hopi-Volk ist für seinen Fleiß und seine Friedfertigkeit bekannt. Es nennt sich selbst Hopituh Shi-nu-mu, was „das friedliche Volk' bedeutet. Die Hopi helfen einander und bleiben ihren Geistern treu. Sie bemühen sich stets, das Richtige zu tun. Auf seinem Weg erlebt Thomas viele Abenteuer - einige beängstigend, die meisten jedoch wunderbar und voller Spannung.
