How Societies Shape Their Energy FutureExecutive Summary*Thinking About Energy* proposes a different way of understanding the energy transition. Rather than reducing it to the replacement of fuels or the adoption of new technologies, the book argues that societies build energy architectures:systems in which primary sources, infrastructure, institutions, markets, regulation, knowledge, and capabilities work together to meet energy needs and evolve over time. From this perspective, the book develops a series of conceptual distinctions that reshape the traditional view of the sector. Electricity is not synonymous with all energy; an energy need exists prior to the demand that ultimately meets it; demand is not a completely given variable, but can also be designed; and a sustainable transition depends not only on available technologies, but also on the capabilities a society manages to accumulate to incorporate, operate, and sustain them. The book also introduces the idea of architectural learning.
