The Wrong Box

'The Wrong Box' is a masterclass in dark Victorian humor and farcical plotting, co-authored by the legendary Robert Louis Stevenson and his stepson Lloyd Osbourne. The story centers on a tontine-a high-stakes financial pool where the last living member inherits a massive fortune. Decades after the investment was formed, only two elderly brothers, Joseph and Masterman Finsbury, remain. When a chaotic train wreck leads to a case of mistaken identity and a misplaced corpse, their greedy nephews find themselves embroiled in a frantic and hilarious struggle to secure the inheritance. This witty tale deviates from Stevenson’s more somber works, offering a satirical look at human greed, bureaucracy, and the absurdities of nineteenth-century life. Through a series of increasingly complicated maneuvers involving a very large crate, the characters navigate a landscape of deception and slapstick misfortune. 'The Wrong Box' remains a seminal work of black comedy, showcasing the authors’ versatility and their ability to spin a gripping, suspenseful narrative out of the most macabre circumstances. Readers will enjoy the sharp dialogue and the ingenious, clockwork-like precision of its comedic errors. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
