The works of Richard Hurd, volume 7

A hush lingers in the candlelit study, where the measured cadence of eighteenth-century prose offers both solace and provocation. Within these pages, the intellectual ferment of the Enlightenment pulses through essays, sermons, and theological reflections that shaped the very fabric of British religious thought. The author’s voice, at once elegant and incisive, navigates the tensions between reason and faith, tradition and reform, inviting readers into the heart of Anglican church history and the moral philosophy writings that defined an era. Each essay unfolds with the clarity and poise that mark the finest English literary criticism, dissecting questions of virtue, conscience, and the public good with a scholar’s rigour and a believer’s passion. What distinguishes this collection is its rare fusion of historical sermons with the broader currents of enlightenment literature, offering not only a window into the spiritual anxieties of the age but also a masterclass in English prose classics. The arguments resonate with a quiet urgency, revealing how theological essays and moral essays became instruments of both personal reflection and societal debate. These writings do not merely catalogue doctrine; they illuminate the lived experience of belief, doubt, and duty in a time when the stakes of religious and intellectual life could scarcely be higher. For those drawn to the subtle interplay of faith and reason, or to the enduring questions of moral responsibility, this volume stands as a testament to the continuing relevance of eighteenth century literature. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions.
