What if changing the future began with changing the way we understand what it means to be human? The Weight of Being is a philosophical work of speculative fiction that follows Eban Stewart, an artist, scholar, and lifelong seeker whose fascination with consciousness, creativity, spirituality, and the nature of human existence gradually becomes a vision for transforming society. From his childhood explorations in the mountains of North Carolina to his intellectual and artistic development as an adult, Eban has always sensed that human consciousness extends beyond the boundaries of ordinary physical life. His search takes him through art, anthropology, science, philosophy, and the spiritual dimensions of existence, shaping a worldview in which humanity, nature, creativity, and consciousness are deeply interconnected. When a new political order begins threatening democratic institutions and individual freedom, Eban can no longer remain an observer. Alongside Sarah, an accomplished artist and emerging student of physics, he begins building the Metamorphosis Project, a growing network of thoughtful, compassionate people committed to creating a different future. Their effort spreads through personal relationships, communities, educators, artists, scientists, and others willing to question the assumptions governing modern society. But resistance brings its own dangers. As Eban moves underground and begins using advanced communications technology and artificial intelligence to challenge the forces attempting to consolidate political power, other characters are drawn into an increasingly complex struggle involving surveillance, technology, political manipulation, and competing visions of America’s future. Meanwhile, Eban’s relationship with Sarah, and later his unexpected connection with Isla, forces him to reconsider what he wants not only for humanity, but for his own life. As the novel progresses, its questions become larger: What happens when artificial intelligence can perform much of the work humans once considered essential? What should give human life meaning when survival is no longer defined by labor? Can technology serve human flourishing rather than human control? And can a society built on creativity, compassion, cooperation, and consciousness replace one driven by power, greed, and endless growth? The Weight of Being ultimately looks beyond political conflict toward a new vision of human life, one in which AI and automation might free humanity to pursue creativity, community, education, exploration, environmental stewardship, and deeper understanding. For readers drawn to philosophical fiction, speculative futures, artificial intelligence, consciousness, social transformation, and stories that ask what humanity might become, The Weight of Being offers an expansive meditation on love, freedom, technology, and the possibility of a different future.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present.
