The 'Viva o Basquete' Tournament was organized by the SME (Municipal Department of Sports, Recreation and Leisure) of Porto Alegre, from 1992 to 2004. It was amateur and recreational in nature, and its aim was to educate for leisure, starting from leisure. The tournament was free and encouraged the participation of autonomous groups according to community co-management. The aim of this work was to recover the history of this Tournament, analyzing the game as sport and as leisure in a proposal for participation and co-management. The city of Porto Alegre has developed a policy of co-management and a history of using squares as community spaces, understood as moments of encounter and relationships.
