The Unwilling Vestal is a historical novel written by Edward Lucas White. The story is set in ancient Rome and follows the life of a young woman named Claudia, who is forced to become a Vestal Virgin against her will. The Vestal Virgins were priestesses of the goddess Vesta, and their duty was to maintain the sacred fire of Vesta’s temple. They were required to remain chaste for thirty years, and if they broke their vow, they would be punished by being buried alive.Claudia is a headstrong and independent young woman who resents being forced into the life of a Vestal Virgin. She struggles to reconcile her duty to the goddess with her own desires and ambitions. Along the way, she meets a young man named Marcus, who is also struggling to find his place in Roman society. Together, they navigate the complex and dangerous world of ancient Rome, facing challenges and dangers at every turn. The Unwilling Vestal is a richly detailed and vividly imagined portrait of ancient Rome. It explores themes of duty, love, and the struggle for personal freedom in a society that values tradition and conformity above all else. With its engaging characters, gripping plot, and immersive historical setting, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in ancient history or historical fiction. That day he was returning from an inspection amid a large and gorgeous retinue. Brinnaria had a blurred vision of splendid uniforms and dazzling accoutrements. Her vision was blurred because her eyes filled with tears; she turned hot and cold and almost fainted with emotion, when the Emperor’s twenty-four lictors lowered their fasces, the whole procession halted, the escort and the Emperor himself swerved their horses aside to let her pass and remained at the salute until she had passed. The sudden realization of the importance of her official position overwhelmed her. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
