The Untarnished

What does it mean to remain whole in a world that rewards compromise? The Untarnished: A Fairy Tale of Truth and Becoming is a luminous moral fairy tale-quietly powerful, timeless, and devoted to the belief that honesty can guide leaders and justice can shape the world.Inspired by a moral tale written in 1781 by Catherine II, Empress of Russia, for her grandson and future heir, this modern adaptation brings an Enlightenment vision of character and responsibility into the present age. Written not for spectacle but for formation, the original story sought to shape a child’s inner life long before power was placed in his hands. In this reimagining, young Caelen is sent on a demanding journey in search of the Rose Without Thorns-a symbol of moral clarity, restraint, and integrity. Along the way, he encounters beauty without goodness, generosity without wisdom, and comfort that asks for a hidden price. The dangers he faces are not monsters or battles, but subtler trials: flattery that erodes judgment, ease that dulls resolve, and temptation disguised as kindness.Blending fairy-tale wonder with philosophical depth, The Untarnished speaks to middle-grade readers while offering rich resonance for families, educators, and thoughtful adults. It is a story that teaches without lecturing-an invitation to reflect on leadership, discernment, and the quiet courage required to walk a straight path in a world of gleaming lies. 6
