This is the story of the founding of two Rutherford Counties, one in North Carolina, the other in Tennessee. Both were named after Griffith Rutherford, a Revolutionary War general. The two counties have a connected history that is largely forgotten but rich in its details. The modern history of the two counties is a study in contrasts that would be of interest to urbanists, economic developers, historians, and many others.
