''The Triumph of the Philistines'' is a satirical novel by Henry Arthur Jones, published in 1899. The story is set in the fictional town of Market Pewbury, where a group of wealthy and conservative residents, known as the Philistines, hold great influence over the town’s morals and values. When a traveling theater troupe arrives in town, the Philistines are outraged by their immoral and scandalous performances. In response, they form a Moral Vigilance Society to combat the perceived corruption of the town. The novel follows the antics of the Philistines and their attempts to maintain their strict moral code, despite the challenges posed by the theater troupe and other outside influences. The protagonist, Mr. Jorgan, is a member of the Moral Vigilance Society who takes his duties very seriously, often to comical effect. Through its humorous and exaggerated portrayal of the Philistines, the novel critiques the hypocrisy and narrow-mindedness of conservative social values. It also explores themes of censorship, freedom of expression, and the clash between traditional and modern values. Overall, ''The Triumph of the Philistines'' is a witty and entertaining satire that offers a commentary on the social and cultural norms of its time. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
