The Torrent is a novel written by Spanish author Vicente Blasco Ibez. It was first published in 1910 and has since become a classic of Spanish literature. The story takes place in Valencia, Spain, and follows the life of the protagonist, Amparo, a young woman who is forced to marry a wealthy landowner against her will. Amparo is deeply unhappy in her marriage and finds solace in the arms of her lover, a young artist named Julio. The two embark on a passionate affair, but their happiness is short-lived when Amparo’s husband discovers their relationship and takes action to end it. The novel explores themes of love, marriage, social class, and the struggle for personal freedom. It also provides a vivid portrayal of life in early 20th-century Spain, including the political and social upheaval of the time. The Torrent is a powerful and moving novel that has stood the test of time and continues to be widely read and admired today.Don Andrs, her advisor, commented upon the change with a gloating ''I told you so.'' What had he always said, when doa Bernarda, in the confiding intimacies of that friendship which amounted almost to a senile, a tranquil, a distantly respectful passion, would complain of Rafael’s contrariness? That it would all pass; that it was a young man’s whim; that youth must have its fling! What was the use? Rafael hadn’t studied to be a monk! Many boys his age, and even older ones, were far worse!... And the old gentleman smiled, for he was thinking of his own easy conquests with the wretched flock of dirty, unkempt peasant girls who wrapped the oranges in the shipping houses of Alcira. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
