The climb of a thousand steps-one three-line, seventeen-syllable haiku at a time.'I’d like to do something creative this morning, but I’m not sure what that is. Write a little something. Even a poem.'’So began this 'idea with barely a pulse,' as Elizabeth Gilbert (Big Magic) would say, which became an experiment, then a practice. In a time when other creative pursuits felt far out of reach, that haiku practice became a daily companion on the trek across many landscapes-natural, spiritual, emotional. Toward some destination deep in the (still) unknown. The Thousandfold Stair is a collection of haiku, drawn from the more than 1,000 composed over a year-long journey, accompanied by author notes and essays. It deals with themes of grief and loss, memory loss/dementia, creativity and craft, and faith, among others.
