Some books are written at desks. This one is written from a thorn throne: the highest hard branch above the farmyard, where the Mad Crow King keeps watch over dog, cat, owl, raccoon, fox, spider, human, landscape, murder, and weather. The Thorn Throne Book: Ravings of the Mad Crow King is the final, darkly luminous volume in K.G. Walton’s Animal Sense septenary: a series of animal-minded observations that travels from the dog’s loyalty, through the cat’s self-possession, the owl’s vigilance, the raccoon’s resourcefulness, the fox’s cunning, and the spider’s patient patterning, before arriving at the crow’s terrible gift for omen, judgment, memory, and defiance. The series moves through seven distinct ways of sensing a shared world; this last book gathers its tensions, rivalries, habits, and forms of intelligence into one black-winged reckoning. The Mad Crow King does not arrive as a simple character. He decrees as though all the forms of attention that preceded him have gathered into one black head and learned to speak. He is not a clean telepath. He is an interpreter. He sees signs, shifts, postures, silences, leftovers, and patterns, and turns them into verdict. This is not the story of a crow who happens to be mad. It is the story of a crow who watches and rules-or believes he rules-as sovereign. Dog, cat, owl, raccoon, fox, spider, horse, human, fence, porch light, grain bin, ditch, weather, and shadow pass beneath his high and wounded attention. Every bark may be a challenge. Every silence may be tribute. Every movement through the yard may be a sign addressed to him alone. There are creatures who trust only what they can grip in their teeth, or feel under their paws, or fold between their claws. I have never been satisfied with so little. The world has always seemed to me more legible than that, as if every careless thing it drops were a syllable, and every accident a half-formed sentence. Before the thorn throne, I read from fenceposts and wires and the broken backs of scarecrows. From here I read the air itself, and the land, and the ways other lives fail to disguise what they intend. Is he a deranged scavenger building a kingdom from refuse? A dark monarch speaking for the black murmur of the murder? Or the one creature who has finally understood what the others have been saying all along? The Mad Crow King does not answer easily. He is magnificent, suspicious, vain, grieving, comic, prophetic, and frequently wrong-though perhaps not wrong in the ways anyone else thinks.Across lyrical prose, fable, satire, list, meditation, invective, and intimate natural observation, The Thorn Throne Book becomes a gothic and feral farm chronicle: a sermon against the vacant sky from a mind too proud to be humble and too attentive to remain unchanged. Here, each small occurrence opens into a larger argument about belonging, perception, mortality, hierarchy, and the limits of possession. As the capstone of the Animal Sense series, this is not merely the crow’s book. It is the place where the earlier animals return as rival intelligences beneath his gaze: the dog’s devotion, the cat’s refusal, the owl’s stillness, the raccoon’s touch, the fox’s side path, and the spider’s thread. The crow would make them all part of his kingdom. Whether they are-or whether he is merely one more creature caught in the farm’s dark and living weave-remains for the reader to determine.
