In The Swans of Pergusa, Peter Shaindlin reinterprets ten selected Greco-Roman mythological stories from Ovid's beloved Metamorphoses. Inspired by the whimsically elegant Tales From Ovid by Ted Hughes, Shaindlin recasts them with a fresh, re-energized brush in his own liberal interpretation of selections from the same work. In a further reflection upon each chosen tale he offers his Epilogues, an aggressive primeval distillation of each of the more elaborate ten preceding poems. Metamorphoses is once again reborn, its timeless tales continuing to resonate into their third millennium. 3
