For a century and a half, catching the sun and the wind was a curiosity - a French inventor’s steam engine driven by mirrors, a Vermont mountaintop turbine that shed a blade in a gale, a delicate silicon wafer built to power satellites because nothing on Earth could afford it. Then, in the span of a single generation, the price of solar electricity fell by more than ninety percent, wind turbines grew taller than cathedrals, and the two oldest sources of power on the planet became the cheapest new electricity in human history. This is the story of how that happened - and of the hard, unfinished engineering of running a modern world on weather. The Sun and the Wind tells the whole of it, from first principles to the frontier. It begins where all the energy begins, in the fusion furnace of the sun and the restless, unevenly heated air of a spinning planet, and explains - in plain language, no equations required - exactly how a sheet of glass turns light into electric current and how a curved blade pulls power from moving air. It follows the long human story: the windmills that drained Holland, the burning mirrors of the ancients, Becquerel’s teenage discovery, the accident of purity that gave Bell Labs the first practical solar cell in 1954, the oil shock that made the world care, the California wind rush that boomed and broke, and the relentless learning curve that drove the cost down decade after decade until it changed the argument entirely. And it does what the boosters and the skeptics both refuse to do: it tells the truth about the hard parts. What intermittency really means and why it is an engineering problem rather than a wall; what a battery the size of a shipping container can and cannot do; why the grid itself must be rebuilt; who controls the mines and the factories behind the clean machine; and how to separate the genuine problems - storage, transmission, materials, the seasonal gap - from the myths about birds, waste, and power that vanishes at night. Complete, balanced, and genuinely gripping, it is the one book for anyone who wants to understand the largest industrial transformation of our time.
