A thought-provoking book, rich in drama, portraying a marine engineer’s remarkable journey, from his birth in the maritime town of Southampton, and Mercantile Marine career. Experienced through significant historical events, and the notable people, he served with along its pathway, before fate and war intervened, reshaping its direction. A keen insight of sea voyages during the Edwardian period, aboard American and White Star Line steamships, serving with famous Captains, including ill-fated Captain E. J. Smith of RMS Titanic, and his personal connection to crew of that tragic disaster. A unique glimpse of life aboard cable ships, prior to the Great War, an attachment to a Royal Navy Expeditionary Force, and RNR minesweeping duties in the North Sea during the Battle of Jutland. Then military service with the Corps of Royal Engineers, attached to Inland Water Transport in Mesopotamia. With a vivid account of his merchant service during the 1930s Great Depression, and Atlantic convoy duties during WW2, encountering severe weather and frequent U-boat attacks. An attachment to the Montreal Pool followed, aboard Admiralty cable ships on Pacific operations. In 1944, engaged in ’Operation Neptune’, the naval offensive, Normandy Landings. While Chief Engineer of an oil tanker, supplied fuel to military bases throughout the Pacific region, including Burma. Despite facing impossible odds, and with tireless energy, he managed to survive unscathed, until his ninety-first year.
