The Stars Refuse to Shine

A spy whose secrets might kill. The mercenary she’s sworn to protect. A destiny written in the stars. CIA operative Kate Devlin has a problem: She may have created a terrorist. These things happen in the world of espionage, and it might not be so bad if her accidental terrorist, now a member of Yemen’s most dangerous jihadi group, didn’t have orders to kill American security consultant Nick Cavanaugh. Nothing could be worse for her career or, after meeting Nick, her sanity. Nick, a former U.S. Marine, could do without the CIA aiding and abetting his death. It isn’t the first time that terrorists have tried to kill him, but he’s starting to worry it might be the last. Despite this distressing development, he’s intrigued by the spy who holds his life in her hands, and he’s willing to risk everything to be close to her. Thrust into an uneasy partnership, Kate and Nick butt heads over everything, but especially over the wisdom of creating terrorists. Kate’s not too proud to admit that he might have a point, but good intentions count for something. Tempting though it is to hand him over to the bad guys herself, she just might miss him if he were gone. Civil war looms, a new breed of extremism spawns from the desert, and Kate and Nick find themselves inexorably linked by the fate of one accidental terrorist. As the battle for their lives races toward its spectacular climax, will they survive an intelligence operation gone awry?
