The Spirit of Yahweh: How the Spirit of the One God Came to Be Confessed as a Third Person examines a central theological question: Does Scripture itself present the Holy Spirit as a distinct third divine person alongside the Father and the Son, or did that formulation emerge gradually through the church’s later doctrinal development?Drawing on close biblical reading, Second Temple Jewish context, early Christian writings, and the history of the fourth-century councils, Richard Amick traces the Spirit’s portrayal from Genesis through Pentecost and beyond. The book begins with the Old Testament’s divine-council worldview: the one God of Israel rules the nations, judges rebellious spiritual powers, and purposes to reclaim the world for Himself. Within this uncompromising monotheism, Scripture also presents a striking complexity in God’s identity-Yahweh and a second figure who bears His authority, presence, and rule. The book examines passages involving the Angel of Yahweh, Psalm 110, Daniel 7, and the 'two powers in heaven' discussion, asking what kind of distinction these texts actually establish. It then turns to the Spirit of Yahweh. Throughout the Old Testament, the Spirit is portrayed as God’s own life-giving breath, presence, power, wisdom, and self-revelation-the means by which God creates, empowers, speaks, renews, and dwells among His people. In the New Testament, Jesus is placed within the identity and authority of the one God of Israel, while the Spirit is repeatedly called the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ. The book argues that this biblical language identifies the Spirit as God’s own active presence rather than clearly presenting Him as a third, parallel divine person.Rather than relying on isolated proof texts, The Spirit of Yahweh follows the whole biblical storyline: the divine council and the nations, the identity of Yahweh and His Son, the Spirit’s work in Israel and the church, and the reversal of Babel at Pentecost. It gives special attention to the passages commonly used in Trinitarian discussions and seeks to present opposing interpretations fairly before reaching its own conclusions. The historical sections trace how early Christian writers spoke about the Father, Son, and Spirit; how Logos theology developed; and how fourth-century controversies led from Nicaea to Constantinople and the formal confession of the Holy Spirit as the third person of the Trinity. The book does not deny Christ’s full deity, the reality of the Spirit’s work, or the authority of Scripture. Instead, it asks whether the later Trinitarian formula is required by the biblical texts or represents a theological explanation developed after the apostolic age.Written for pastors, seminary students, teachers, and thoughtful lay readers, this study combines serious scholarship with accessible prose. It invites readers-whether they agree or disagree-to set inherited assumptions aside long enough to hear the biblical writers on their own terms. Its central proposal is both simple and far-reaching: one God, His Son, and His own Spirit
