Extremely important for the development of numerous fields of knowledge in Physics and Chemistry, spectroscopy is still little covered in a Physics degree course. This book provides a historical survey of spectroscopy, from its first observations with Isaac Newton in 1664, with the decomposition of white light by the prism, and over time with other important scientists such as Fraunhofer, Bunsen and Kirchhoff and its application in astronomy. The author presents the description, operation and some didactic applications of the spectroscope in the undergraduate physics laboratory.
