The Spanish Gipsie; And All’s Lost By Lust is a play written by Thomas Middleton, a prominent English playwright of the Jacobean era. The play centers around two intertwined stories of love, lust, and betrayal. The first story follows the forbidden romance between the Spanish Gipsy, Preciosa, and the nobleman, Don Juan. Despite their class differences and the disapproval of their families, the two lovers are determined to be together. However, their happiness is threatened by the jealousy of Don Juan’s former lover, Isabella, and the machinations of Preciosa’s father, who seeks to use her as a pawn in his own political games. The second story focuses on the downfall of the wealthy merchant, Hippolito, who becomes consumed by his lust for the prostitute, Infelice. As his obsession grows, Hippolito loses everything he holds dear, including his fortune, his reputation, and his sanity. As the two stories unfold, they become increasingly intertwined, with characters from one plotline crossing over into the other. The play is a complex exploration of the destructive power of desire and the consequences of pursuing one’s passions without regard for the consequences. It features a colorful cast of characters, including gypsies, nobles, merchants, and prostitutes, and is filled with drama, intrigue, and suspense. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
