Modern sociological orthodoxy is trapped within a paradigm of flattening. For over half a century, the dominant theoretical frameworks have celebrated the systematic dismantling of boundaries-geographic, institutional, cultural, and semantic-as the ultimate metric of human liberation. From the celebratory narratives of borderless globalism and decentralized networks to the post-modern critique of stable institutional hierarchies, the consensus has remained firm: to progress is to dissolve. The Sovereign Boundary: Sociology of Institutional and Cultural Differentiation challenges this foundational premise. It argues that the contemporary celebration of a fluid, borderless social landscape represents a profound civilizational pathology rather than an evolution. When a society strips away its vertical structures, it does not achieve true liberation. Instead, it enters a state of massification, where distinct individual agency and institutional integrity are completely ironed out into a horizontal expanse of absolute uniformity.

This classic work chronicles how New York, London, and Tokyo became command centers for the global economy and in the process underwent a series of massive and parallel changes. What distinguishes Sassen’s theoretical framework is the emphasis on the formation of cross-border dynamics through which these cities and the growing number of other global cities begin to form strateg...

How do dealers price contemporary art in a world where objective criteria seem absent? Talking Prices is the first book to examine this question from a sociological perspective. On the basis of a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data, including interviews with art dealers in New York and Amsterdam, Olav Velthuis shows how contemporary art galleries juggle the contradi...

The idea of a 'second coming' or a transition of the Messianic message is a deep topic that sits at the intersection of history, theology, and Jewish-Christian relations. To break this down, we have to look at how the role of the Messiah is defined in both traditions and how figures like St. Paul and the Rebbe (Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson) fit into those frameworks. ...

The modern intellectual landscape is haunted by a single, catastrophic urge: the desire to dissolve. In ethics, it shows up as a sentimental relativism that replaces absolute moral categories with a blurry gradient of extenuating circumstances. In po...
