The Sound of Winter

THE NEBULA NOMINEE’S MOST FAMOUS NOVEL - 'A LOVE STORY SET IN A MUTATION-RIDDLED POST-DISASTER WONDERLAND THAT ATTEMPTS TO CREATE A HUMANLY MOVING OUTCOME.' Science Fiction EncyclopediaIn The Wasteland. . . The seasons changed in a matter of minutes . . . glistening foliage caressed the senses . . . giant furry worms screeched their horror . . . occasionally, a simurgh dug his claws into the shoulder of a human being-and stayed until he had drained his victim of life and knowledge. Here, Michael St. Claire, revolutionary and exile, had come to find his answers. He was afraid-not so much for himself as for Elizabeth, a deaf-mute child-woman, his sister. But as their coach entered the prohibitive plains of the Wasteland, as sudden snow encompassed them, and a giant worm appeared on the horizon, Elizabeth seemed to come alive. Her miraculous transformation had begun ...A World Of Sudden Deaths . . .The man, dressed in black fur breeches and a white fur coat, his skin and shoulder-length hair as pure white as the snow itself. As Michael and Elizabeth watched, the man bellowed, leaped, and charged the giant worm with uncanny speed. His spear penetrated the raging creature’s eye . . .The giant worm emitted a terrible scream, high-pitched, excruciating, unlike anything in Michael’s experience. Michael covered his ears. Elizabeth, in her silent world, continued to watch the drama-fascinated but unafraid . . .'The post-apocalyptic wasteland of The Sound of Winter is a place where giant worms roam, seraphim hunt them, and immortal birds with human masks devour the life and knowledge of whomever they land upon. The wasteland is where the seasons change in seconds and lives can change just as quickly.'The Sound of Winter is clearly satirical in nature. Every page seeps with irony and contradiction. I genuinely believe that the handful of other reviewers who read this book completely misinterpreted what they were reading. The satire and irony is subtle, saying that unemployment will not be a problem under democracy, and claiming that only those that volunteer for the military can participate in voting even though the leaders of the revolution have never been in the military, thus deciding that they would be the special exception to the rule. The entire book is a critique and commentary on democracy and monarchy, and how both are quite similar and flawed systems of government.' -Goodreads'The Sound of Winter is considered by many to be his best work.' -Encyclopedia Of Science Fiction
