The Slowcoach

'The Slowcoach' is a whimsical and heartwarming classic of Edwardian children’s literature that captures the spirit of adventure and the simple joys of discovery. The story follows the Avory children, who unexpectedly receive a mysterious gift: a fully-equipped horse-drawn caravan named the Slowcoach. With a sense of wonder and newfound independence, the siblings set out on a journey through the idyllic English countryside, traveling at a leisurely pace that allows them to truly experience the world around them.As they traverse the roads of Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties, the children encounter a delightful array of characters, from eccentric travelers to hospitable locals, all while managing the daily tasks of life on the road. E.V. Lucas crafts a narrative filled with humor, gentle wisdom, and a profound appreciation for the landscape and traditions of England. This tale of a summer holiday spent under the open sky remains a quintessential example of early 20th-century youth fiction, emphasizing the value of family bonds, curiosity, and the magic found in the ordinary. 'The Slowcoach' is a celebration of childhood freedom and the timeless appeal of a pastoral journey through the heart of the British Isles. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
