The Selected Poems

'The Selected Poems' presents a curated collection of works by Lizette Woodworth Reese, one of the most distinguished voices in American lyric poetry. Known for her clarity of vision and economy of language, Reese’s poetry bridges the gap between the Victorian era and the emergence of modernism. This collection showcases her mastery of traditional forms, particularly the sonnet, through which she explores profound themes of mortality, faith, and the ephemeral beauty of the natural world.Within these pages, readers will find evocative depictions of the Maryland countryside, where orchards, lilacs, and changing seasons serve as backdrops for introspective meditation. Reese’s verses are characterized by a quiet intensity and a rhythmic grace that have earned her a lasting place in the literary canon. From the celebrated lines of her famous sonnet 'Tears' to her delicate observations of small, everyday moments, this volume captures the essence of a poet who found transcendence in the simple and the sincere. 'The Selected Poems' is an essential acquisition for those seeking to experience the enduring power of early twentieth-century American verse. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
