Following The First Tri: As a Young Man, we pick up the story of self-described everyman, Dan Fishwick, just after his arrival at University School, an all-boys school in Shaker Heights, Ohio. The Second Tri: School Pictures captures images from Dan’s life as a teacher. Just as photographs record how we change, the stories of his years in school also keep a record of broad shifts in our society. This gallery of school pictures takes us from the mid-1970s, with computers just on the horizon, to their ubiquitous presence in the new century. But most of all The Second Tri: School Pictures is Dan Fishwick’s own story of his thirty years teaching, coaching, counseling, bus-driving and administrating. He gives us insight into what makes a school work, from headmaster to longtime maintenance staff, equals in the important ways. Fishwick discusses issues of discipline, the option of home-schooling, single-sex and co-education, comparisons to middle schools in France and China, and much more through his own experiences. The Second Tri is a celebration of the teaching life, but that’s only the half of it. He balances that with other images - clear shots of family, travels, barn-building, auto-restoration and music. University School is in Shaker Heights, and Willoughby, always Dan’s place, sixteen miles away. Covering that distance from where he came is a recurring theme because home, like the school, has deep roots.
