This historical novel investigates a facinating piece of relatively unknown history of the collusion of the Scottish Catholic Lords with Philip II of Spain. With the help of Catholics in Scotland several thousand Spanish troops were planning to land at the port of Kirkcudbright in Southern Scotland and join them in an invasion of England to overthrow Queen Elizabeth I. Lord John Maxwell, Earl of Morton, Clan chief of Caerlaverock Castle near Dumfries, travels to Spain and spends a year at the Escorial Palace near Madrid. He meets with King Philip the most powerful monarch of the world, and the Admirals of the Spanish Armada. Together they plot the invasion of England.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...

Church history can get into some extremely weighty matters very quickly. After all, when an author is diving into the good, bad, and ugly of human behavior, and then placing alongside those things considerations of religious faith and practice-always prime kindling for the fires of controversy in their own right-there will inevitably be plenty of serious stuff for the reader to...
