A graduate in Arts, Divinity and Education of Edinburgh, and a former parish minister, he is well known as an author and has written widely on such subjects as the history of Edinburgh schools, the early British Church and many educational and religious subjects. His latest book was People and Places in the Story of the Scottish Church (St Andrew Press, 1976).
