As I write this concluding chapter for 'The Rise of the Sikh Empire,' I am immersed in a contemplative state, reflecting on the remarkable voyage of the Sikh community. The rise of the Sikhs throughout the 18th and 19th centuries may be considered a rather insignificant event in the broader context of global history. However, the consequences had a significant impact. After enduring more than two centuries of Muslim rule in northern India, the Sikhs established a territory that stretched all the way to the western areas of Peshawar. This expansion not only altered the political terrain but also suggested an alternative historical path where, in the absence of British involvement, the boundaries of present-day Pakistan and India may have been significantly distinct. The emergence of Sikh authority was not devoid of its tribulations. The faith, similar to several others, was shaped through the intense experience of oppression and martyrdom. The declining Mughal Empire, desperate to hold on to its diminishing prestige, frequently battled with the emerging Sikh population. As an author and historian, I expected to experience a feeling of sadness when narrating these initial stages of my religion’s history. Nevertheless, when I bring my project to a close on Christmas Day 2023, I experience an unforeseen elevation in my mood.Despite not being a Christian, I am currently engrossed in listening to the transcendent chants of Orthodox monks from Mount Athos. Their chants, characterised by a divine melody, exhibit a striking similarity to the Sikh Shabads and the melodious recitations of the Torah. Religious music possesses a ubiquitous essence, capable of uplifting the spirit and surpassing the limitations of specific religious beliefs. This book, although primarily dedicated to honouring Sikh history, is designed to reach a wider audience. This tale is crafted specifically for the young members of my community, aiming to establish a connection between them and their family heritage. Additionally, it appeals to individuals who possess a keen interest in exploring the intricate and diverse tapestry of human history. I aspire for my report to surpass mere historical significance and function as a poignant reminder of our collective human nature. Amidst a time marked by religious conflicts that have left lasting wounds on the world, may this account of the Sikh Empire serve as a guiding light, leading us towards a future where faith serves as a unifying force rather than a divisive one. May future generations inherit a society devoid of religious conflicts, where all cultures and religions peacefully coexist in harmony and mutual respect. 6
