THE REMAKING OF SIGMUND FREUDIt is the 22nd century, and the colony on Venus is in trouble. A member of the crew has rebelled and is threatening to blow up their dome. Desperate measures are called for, so the colonists activate the Sigmund Freud simulacrum, a regeneration of the original 19th century alienist. It takes Freud awhile to come to terms with his new reconstituted self, but he does what he can to bring the rebel-who believes that Venusians are attacking him-to his senses. What, after all, can he offer the crew that will bring this man to his senses and save them from destruction? The solution does not end well, but that is only the beginning of Freud’s trials. For in the next regeneration, he has to deal with a real alien threat. THE MEN INSIDELeslie Blount is one of the Messengers. It is a very select profession. Being fairly diminutive in stature, it is one he was predisposed to at birth. It is his job to be shrunk down in size by the Hulm Projector, inserted into the bodies of rich patients, and once there, to remove their cancer from within before returning to normal. Being a Messenger, Blount has escaped the poverty and crime that permeates life in 21st century Downside. But the life of a Messenger has its drawbacks, the sacrifice of one’s sanity being only one of them. Now as Blount recovers from having removed the cancer from yet another old rich man, he contemplates the unthinkable... the murder of his latest patient.
