Dixon, a travelling representative, stops one evening during a thick fog at an unfamiliar inn, The Recco. Puzzled by the name, licensee Mrs Ezard explains it is a corrpution of the word 're-echo'. A strange and unsettling atmosphere, Dixon overhears a conversation between Mr Ezard and local girl Mary Hendrey. The pair are plotting a murder - the murder of Mrs Ezard. Dixon, bewildered and alarmed, wonders whether he should warn Mrs Ezard but instead is shocked to discover that Mr Ezard has in fact been dead for two years, having been killed in a car accident. The truth dawns on Dixon that he has witnessed a ghostly echo from the past.
