The Puritan And His Daughter is a novel written by James Kirke Paulding. The story is set in the 17th century in New England and follows the life of a Puritan named John Fletcher and his daughter, Alice. John is a strict Puritan who is deeply devoted to his faith and believes in living a simple and austere life. He is also a fierce opponent of the Quaker movement, which he sees as a threat to the Puritan way of life.Alice, on the other hand, is a free-spirited young woman who is curious about the world beyond her Puritan community. She is drawn to the Quaker beliefs and begins to question her father’s strict adherence to Puritanism. As Alice becomes more involved with the Quakers, she finds herself at odds with her father and the rest of her community. The novel explores themes of religious intolerance, family conflict, and the struggle between tradition and modernity. It also offers a glimpse into the early history of America and the religious and cultural tensions that existed during that time.Overall, The Puritan And His Daughter is a thought-provoking and engaging novel that offers a unique perspective on the early history of America and the challenges faced by those who dared to question the status quo.During the somewhat tedious recovery of Harold, and his subsequent irresolution, both parties had been engaged in active hostilities, unaccompanied by any decisive result. The battle of Edgehill had been fought with doubtful success, and the intervals of action were occupied by negociations in which, it is believed neither party was sincere. Mutual propositions for peace were made and declined under various pretences, and it had become evident to those who looked beneath the surface, that the contest could only be decided by the sword. Accordingly, both parties braced themselves for the final issue. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
