The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner is a novel written by Scottish author James Hogg. The book follows the story of Robert Wringhim, a young man raised in a strict Calvinist household in 18th century Scotland. Robert becomes convinced that he is one of the elect, chosen by God for salvation, and begins to see himself as above the law. He is encouraged in his beliefs by a mysterious stranger named Gil-Martin, who appears to have supernatural powers and who convinces Robert that he is doing God’s work by committing murder. As the novel progresses, Robert becomes increasingly paranoid and delusional, convinced that his actions are justified and that he is immune to punishment. He commits several murders, including that of his own brother, and is eventually caught and put on trial. However, even as he faces the gallows, Robert remains convinced that he is one of the chosen few and that his actions were predestined. The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner is a complex and thought-provoking novel that explores themes of religious fanaticism, mental illness, and the nature of evil. It is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Scottish literature and has been praised for its psychological depth, its exploration of moral ambiguity, and its innovative narrative structure.''Such miserable inanity! What care I for your threatenings of a tribunal? I who must soon stand before my last earthly one? What could the word of such a culprit avail? Or, if it could, where is the judge that could enforce it?''This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
