The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux is a gothic mystery novel set in the Paris Opera House. It tells the story of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius known as the Phantom, who lives in the catacombs beneath the opera. He becomes obsessed with the young singer Christine Daaé, helping her rise to fame while demanding her love in return. Christine, however, is torn between fear of the Phantom and her love for her childhood friend, Raoul. The Phantom’s jealousy and desire lead to tragic events, forcing Christine to confront his humanity and compassion despite his darkness. Ultimately, the tale explores love, obsession, beauty, and the pain of isolation.
