The People of Juvik

'The People of Juvik : The Trough of the Wave' is the opening masterpiece of Olav Duun’s celebrated family saga, a monumental work in Norwegian literature. This first volume introduces readers to the Juvik family, a powerful clan of farmers living in a remote coastal community in Norway during the transition from the old ways to the dawn of a new era. At its core, the novel explores the primal struggles of humanity against the harsh elements of nature and the internal conflicts of the soul.Centering on the legendary figure of Per Anders, the story delves into the ancestral heritage of a family that stands as a bridge between a semi-mythical past and the evolving social realities of the nineteenth century. Duun masterfully blends psychological depth with a sweeping historical narrative, capturing the folklore, superstitions, and rugged determination that define his characters. The prose evokes the atmospheric beauty and isolation of the Norwegian landscape while examining universal themes of destiny, legacy, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. 'The People of Juvik : The Trough of the Wave' is an essential read for those interested in the European literary tradition and the complex evolution of rural society. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
