The Northern Iron is a historical fiction novel written by George A. Birmingham. The story is set in the early 20th century and follows the lives of two families, the Molloys and the Gaffneys, who live in a small town in Ireland. The novel explores the themes of family, love, politics, and religion. The Molloys are a wealthy family who own a large ironworks factory in the town. They are also staunch Catholics and are deeply involved in local politics. The Gaffneys, on the other hand, are a poor family who work in the factory. They are Protestant and have a long-standing feud with the Molloys. The story begins with the arrival of a new priest in the town, Father Owen O’Malley. He is a progressive priest who wants to bridge the gap between the two families and bring peace to the town. However, his efforts are met with resistance from both sides. As the story progresses, the lives of the two families become intertwined in unexpected ways. There are love affairs, betrayals, and tragedies that test the strength of their relationships. Meanwhile, the political situation in Ireland is heating up, and the Molloys and the Gaffneys find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict. The Northern Iron is a well-written and engaging novel that provides a fascinating insight into Irish history and culture. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is full of twists and turns that keep the reader hooked until the very end. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
