They explore answers as well as questions shaped by faith, trying to be as lucid as possible about mysteries as well as ideas--asking, for instance, ''What do we mean by God or heaven?'' Many of these poems are like responses from any thoughtful believer or inquirer to various aspects of Christianity. Other poems have to do with compatible themes and subjects, such as nature in its precarious beauty and, especially, love and marriage.
