The New Orthodoxy

'The New Orthodoxy' is a profound exploration of liberal theology and the evolution of religious thought in the modern era. Edward Scribner Ames presents a compelling vision for a faith that is compatible with scientific inquiry and the complexities of contemporary life. Rather than relying on rigid dogmas or historical precedents, Ames argues for a religion grounded in human experience, social progress, and democratic values. The work examines how religious consciousness adapts to new cultural landscapes, emphasizing the importance of ethical living and community service as the heart of true spirituality. By applying pragmatic philosophy to the realm of the sacred, Ames seeks to redefine orthodoxy as a dynamic, living commitment to the highest ideals of humanity. 'The New Orthodoxy' serves as a vital bridge between traditional Christian values and the intellectual demands of the early 20th century, offering insights that continue to resonate with readers interested in the intersection of philosophy, sociology, and religion. It remains an essential text for understanding the development of American religious modernism and the ongoing dialogue between faith and reason. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
