The New Atalantis is a novel written by Mary de la Rivire Manley, also known as Mrs. Manley, in 1709. The book is a fictional account of the society of the time, set on an imaginary island called Atalantis. It is a satire on the political and social conditions of the early 18th century England, and deals with themes of love, sex, politics, and gender. The plot revolves around the character of Lady Intelligence, who is sent on a mission to Atalantis by Queen Elizabeth, to investigate the society of the island. Lady Intelligence discovers a society that is ruled by women, where men are subservient and exist only for the pleasure of women. The women of Atalantis are portrayed as intelligent and rational, while the men are depicted as emotional and irrational. The novel also deals with the theme of gender roles, and challenges the traditional notions of masculinity and femininity. It explores the idea of a society where women are in power, and men are relegated to the role of caretakers and pleasure providers. The New Atalantis is a significant work of literature, as it was one of the first feminist novels written in English. It was also one of the earliest examples of a utopian novel, and influenced later works such as Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift. The book is a fascinating insight into the political and social conditions of the early 18th century, and is still relevant today for its exploration of gender roles and power dynamics.Let us go, let us go for ever, said she, sobbing, my Lord Duke, I wish your Eminence all Happiness, wretched Charlot shall never disturb it. Farewel, my dear Countess, I was not born to taste the Sweets of Love and Friendship: Here she hasted out of the Room, and got into the Coach that waited, without taking her Leave in Form, either of the one or the other. They made after her to the Gate; she briskly order’d the Coachman to drive on, and with six good Horses was presently out of sight. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
