The Mystics of the Church

'The Mystics of the Church' is a profound and illuminating survey of the Christian mystical tradition, written by the esteemed spiritual author Evelyn Underhill. This work examines the historical development of mysticism within the institutional church, tracing the lives and insights of individuals who sought a direct and personal experience of the Divine. From the early apostolic period through the Middle Ages and into the post-Reformation era, Underhill highlights how these visionary figures influenced Christian theology and practice. The book explores the defining characteristics of mystical life, emphasizing that these experiences were often grounded in a deep commitment to the community of faith. Underhill skillfully balances biographical accounts with theological analysis, presenting the mystics not as isolated eccentrics but as vital contributors to the spiritual health of the Church. By examining the works of figures like St. Augustine, Bernard of Clairvaux, and the great English mystics, the text provides a rich tapestry of contemplative thought. 'The Mystics of the Church' serves as an essential resource for readers seeking to understand the historical roots of spiritual experience and the enduring power of the contemplative path within the Christian tradition. It remains a foundational text for the study of Western spirituality and religious history. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
